How, or where can I find, and what are the costs of traffic tickets and the eligibility guidelines for Defensive Driving School?
If your ticket was by a City of Madison Police Officer and is on the schedule of fines, you may pay in person,via the internet using CITEPAY or by mail at 100 Hughes Road. You may go to school if you have not attended a defensive driving school in the past two years.

Yes you may as long as the charge is on the Schedule of Fines.

What day and times are court sessions?
Trials and probation reviews are held on Thursday mornings starting at 8:30 am. Arraignment for traffic tickets and non-traffic cases are held on Friday mornings starting at 8:30 am.

What is an arraignment?
An arraignment is when the defendant appears in front of the judge to be read the charges against him/her so that they may enter a plea of guilty or not guilty.

How long with court last?
Court usually lasts one to four hours.

Can I talk with the judge or prosecutor before my court date?
The judge can only speak with you from the bench on your court date. The prosecutor’s office can be reached at (256) 772-5681.

What will happen if I fail to appear in court?
A warrant for your arrest will be issued and in the case of a traffic ticket, your driver’s license will be suspended.

What do I do if my license is suspended?
Contact the Department of Public Safety at (334) 242-4400 in Montgomery, or you may contact the Huntsville office at (256) 539-4028.

Read the bottom of the ticket above your signature for court appearance information.

How do I reschedule my court date?
If you need a continuance on your court appearances or payments call (256) 772-5617.

Who writes tickets that would be processed in the Madison City Court?
Traffic tickets written by a City of Madison police officer within the City limits of Madison would be processed in the Madison Municipal Court.

Does every charge require a court appearance?
The Fine Schedule lists offenses that qualify for a guilty plea and payment without making a court appearance.

No. You must appear in person to enter a guilty plea and sign a Waiver of Rights Form.

How do I sign up for a defensive driving course?
To attend a Defensive Driving Course, your traffic offense must qualify for the course. The advantage of attending the course is that your ticket will be dismissed and will not result in points added to your driving history.
