What if I have a traffic visibility problem?
If you encounter an obstruction that blocks visibility at an intersection or along city streets, call the City of Madison Public Works (256) 722-8490 from 6:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Public Works Traffic Division will determine if the obstruction can be trimmed or removed.

What is the difference between trash and garbage?
Trash is yard debris and large items, the service is provided by the City of Madison Public Works. Garbage is household waste, the service is provided by the county you live in; Madison County Sanitation, (256) 532-3718 or Limestone County, (C.C.S. Garbage service) (256) 232-3594.

To report any signal malfunctions call (256) 772-8490 from 6:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. After hours and on weekends call police dispatch at (256) 722-7190. Note: if all lights are not functioning it is caused by a power outage, not a signal malfunction.

Who takes care of trimming trees on public property?
The City of Madison trims tree limbs that extend over city streets on an as-needed basis. Dead trees or those that pose a hazard on city property are removed by Street Maintenance crews. Residents that are property owners are responsible for trimming shrubs and tree limbs that block sidewalks.
Inquiries regarding tree trimming should be directed to Public Works Streets Division at (256) 772-8490. To report an emergency such as street blockages due to fallen trees call (256) 772-8490 from 6:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. After hours and on weekends call police dispatch at (256) 722-7190.

What if I notice a need for street maintenance and repairs?
Residents can report potholes, street repairs, or other related problems to the Public Works Streets Division (256) 772-8490 during normal business hours (6:00 am to 3:30 pm). Emergency or hazardous conditions can be reported to police dispatch at (256) 722-7190 after business hours and on weekends.

Who maintains street signs and pavement markings?
The City of Madison maintains signs and pavement markings on all primary streets in Madison. The Public Works department is responsible for seeing that street name signs are located at every city-maintained intersection. If you have a question or comment about signs or pavement markings or want to report damaged or missing signs, call (256) 772-8490 from 6:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. After 3:30 pm, call police dispatch at (256) 722-7190.

Can you locate a gravesite for me?
Yes. We will need the name of the person, and we will give you the lot, block, and space of the gravesite. We will also meet you at the cemetery and show you the physical location.

Can the family plant trees, flowers, or shrubs on gravesites?
Yes, but only after written approval by the City. Please refer to your Agreement for Planting for additional information. If they become unsightly or limit access to other lots they will be removed and discarded.

Is water provided for the landowner's use?
Yes, there are water hoses throughout the cemeteries.
