1. I would like to rezone some of my property. What should I do?

Call the Planning Department at (256) 772-5427. Rezoning forms may be found on the Planning Department's website. Rezoning is a 60 to 90 day process so please plan your schedule accordingly. 2. I am considering opening a business in Madison. What should I do?

Call the Planning Department at 256-772-2885 and we can assist you. Also visit the Madison Chamber of Commerce website (below). The Chamber and the City will work together to see that you get all the information and resources you need to make an informed decision on your business location, and in many cases, can direct you to sources of business assistance, financing, and incentive packages. 3. Where and how in the City can I develop a particular use (e.g., residential)?

Find a vacant parcel of land and determine its zoning designation by checking the Zoning Map. If approved for that particular use, confirm that the parcel you are considering has been platted for that particular use (density, unit type, etc.) by calling the Planning Department at (256) 772-5638. 4. What is the zoning on a subject property and what may be built on it?

To determine the answer, first identify the location of the subject property by reviewing a survey, and then find it on a City Zoning Map, determine the zoning designation. 5. Where can I obtain a copy of an existing survey for a specific parcel of land?

The City does not file copies of surveys. However, we do have many subdivision plats on file, which contain lot dimensions and subdivision development restrictions. Call the Planning Department at (256) 772-5637. Tax maps can be accessed online at the Madison County Tax Assessor's Office.

6. What are the required building setbacks for a subject property?

Call 256-772-5637 OR First, identify the location of the subject property by reviewing a survey, and then find it on the City Zoning Map, determine the zoning designation, and refer to the Yard Setbacks section of the identified zoning designation in the City's Zoning Ordinance.

7. How big of a shed am I permitted to have and where on my property can I place it?

8. Does the City have a Comprehensive Plan?

The City has a recently adopted master plan, call the Madison Growth Plan. The City also has a Comprehensive Plan, which was last updated in 2001. Copies are available in City Hall and online. Madison Growth Plan

9. Is the City's zoning map online?

Yes. You can access it online through GIS.
